Top 3 Camino Lessons

Dear Camino fans, I would like to share three major lessons from my first and only Camino this year:

First of all, if one of your goals in walking the Camino de Santiago is to become a more patient person, you may find little opportunity to practice patience. This was one of my primary goals in walking my first Camino this year, but I was scarcely presented with opportunities to develop patience. I had expected frequently to encounter fellow pilgrims who would be noisy in the albergues, leave bathrooms unclean, and basically jostle with me for access to shared services. This rarely occurred, however. Rather, I found myself frequently thinking, “Wow, when will l have a chance to practice patience? Everyone is so kind and considerate.”

Key Lessons

  • Camino Blues
  • Blisters
  • Too Much Kindness?

My second biggest lesson was to heed the advice of coating my feet, especially toes, with Vaseline every morning. Having thought it too much effort and that it would leave my socks permanently greasy, I disregarded the advice, only to end up with humongous blisters under my toes. The Vaseline lost its greasiness by the end the day and kept my feet blister free. It’s available in most pharmacies along the Camino.

And thirdly, to avoid the post-Camino blues, I signed up as a host on the Warm Showers app. Having realized that a great deal of the magic the Camino affords is the constant interaction with new people, from all over the world, I explored means of keeping a steady flow of new people and ideas into my life once I got back home. That’s when someone told me that long-distance bicyclists use this app to find free places to stay along their routes. Its costs next to nothing to host these cyclists for a night or two and the riches they add to my life are immeasurable.
